Patrick McDonnell

Patrick McDonnell is the cartoonist of the widely loved and award-winning syndicated comic strip Mutts, which always takes a whimsical look into the life of pets with dog and cat pals Earl and Mooch leading the way. Patrick donated this ORIGINAL ART from Mutts just for our auction. Measuring 11.5x5”, this strip appeared in newspapers on March 4, 2006. It was drawn in ink on Bristol board with accents of zipatone (the dots) for shading. It is signed in pencil at the bottom with a little sketch of Earl and Mooch.

Patrick McDonnell was not always a comic strip artist. He was an illustrator whose work regularly appeared in magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Reader’s Digest, Forbes, and Time. He delved into the comic strip world with Bad Baby, a strip that only appeared in the monthly Parents Magazine. Mutts, of course, appears daily in newspapers around the world, and yet somehow McDonnell has found time to return to his illustration roots by creating many children’s books, even winning a Caldecott Honor in the process for the Jane Goodall biography Me…Jane! He also finds time to help out animal charities, and to that end, Earl and Mooch are featured on a New Jersey license plate sold to raise money to help animals!
